Welcome to our newest blog series entitled ‘Sorbet’s Finest’ in which we proudly introduce you to each of our retail partners. During each feature we hope to highlight the unique and talented retailers who, like us, appreciate and have chosen to showcase the beautifully rare untreated, coloured sapphire.

With that said, we’d like to introduce you to Laura of Laura Tedesco Jewellery. Based out of Hamilton, Ontario, known to many as ‘Steel City’ or ‘The Hammer’, Hamilton is certainly fortunate to include such a talented and admired jeweller in Laura. Not only is Laura making a name for herself through her spectacular jewellery designs, but she is also a highly respected member of her community. We could not have been more honoured to have recently sat down with Laura and learn more about her love and passion for jewellery. Let’s take it away…

Laura, let’s begin by asking why you chose a career in jewellery?
Jewellery was ingrained in my DNA as soon as I entered this world. I grew up in the family jewellery business. One of my earliest memories was looking over my father’s shoulder sorting diamonds. From that day forward I was hooked. After many years working alongside my dad I took the business into a different direction after his retirement and opened a store of my own catering to custom design.

What drew you towards a jewellery brand like Sorbet Sapphire? Why offer untreated, coloured sapphires to your customers?
Being a custom jewellery shop, we pride ourselves on creating one-of-a-kind pieces that reflect on the uniqueness of the wearer. Sorbet Sapphire adds to this uniqueness by offering sapphires that are untreated, providing the customer with a spectrum of colours that are not the typical blue or peach that we would usually associate with this gemstone. That being said, a sapphire from Sorbet Sapphire completes the custom jewellery experience by offering one-of-a-kind colour.

If you had to pick a sapphire shape to best describe you, which would you choose and why?
Pears have a soft, round side which I feel could help describe my personality of being dreamy, romantic and an overall softy. But, on the other side, there’s a point. I also have an edge and en eye for detail. Therefore, you could say with respect to design and business…I’m sharp and on point ?

Through your work, what do you feel most proud of?
Being a custom jewellery designer, I am most proud of my ability to listen to my clients and produce jewellery that speaks to who they are. There is no greater joy for me than witnessing tears of happiness on my customer’s faces when the wear their piece of jewellery for the first time.

Most people reading this might wonder, does a career in jewellery provide the opportunity to balance your time between work and family?
Absolutely, and this balance brings me great joy. My husband is also my business partner and with this it allows me (and him) the flexibility to be a more present mother and father to our son, Alexander.

Professionally, what is a typical work day like for you?
A typical workday involves; meeting with clients, designing pieces, going back and forth with my craftsmanship / manufacturers to ensure everything is just right and dreaming about the next design.

For the music lovers out there, what 90’s one-hit-wonder would best describe your life at this moment in time?
“Jump around” by House of Pain because I wear many hats, from being a mom to business owner. I find I’m always jumping from one thing to the next.

Laura, we can’t thank you enough for taking the time to answer our questions. We’d like to end on one final thought. When it comes to purchasing jewellery, any “words of advice” for our readers?
When purchasing jewellery, buy from someone you trust and will be able to service your purchase in the future. It’s nice to build a relationship with your jeweller. Also, think about purchasing jewellery that speaks to you or holds a special meaning to you or the person who will be wearing it. There’s something just so special about that.
